    College Football Picks Week 9

    Updated: October 24th, 2010

Friday Night-West Virginia vs Uconn Under 45 1/2

West Virginia’s offense produces a lot of horizontal plays which eat up clock and don’t score points. But their defense is very athletic and probably the best in the Big East. With Frazer starting, expect West Virginia to key on the run and slow down Todman in what could be a weather affected field on Friday Night.

Colorado State -16 over New Mexico

Colorado State can physically dominate the weaker teams and New Mexico certainly qualifies. New Mexico has been slaughtered by most teams they have played and I see there is another whooping coming in Fort Collins this week. The Buffaloes beat UNLV a few weeks ago as a 3 point favorite 43-10. They need another win and they will be focused to take advantage of a patsy at home. They will not let-up in this contest after losing by 53 to Utah last week. They will take that beating out on New Mexico.

    Michigan State +6.5 over Iowa

Most Hawkeye backers will say that Michigan State has not faced a defensive line like the one they will face this week. This is true. But Iowa’s two best linebackers are doubtful and they have struggled all year with the intermediate passing game. QB Cousins has been accurate and careful with the ball and should be able to make key third downs against the Iowa zone to keep drives alive. On offense, Iowa’s offensive line has not been overly impressive in opening up holes for the sole running back, Adam Robinson. Michigan State’s defensive line may not be as great at getting after the quarterback but they hold their ground well allowing their instinctive linebacker group led by Greg Jones to make plays. Stanzi will make plays but this one should be a close one like last’s year battle. Take the points.

Michigan -1 1/2 over Penn State

Penn State hasn’t shown the ability to shut down opponents running games. Center David Molk and QB Robinson are probable which should translate into points for the Wolverines. Michigan has been terrible against the pass this season but has performed better against the run which is what Penn State will try to establish with its starting QB Bolden out. Michigan’s gambling linebackers may find their guesses more accurate against the simple offense of the Lions.

    Utah -7 over Air Force

I realize Utah has a big game next week against TCU but if they do not win this one, then next week’s game will not mean as much. They have to beat Air Force in order to get recognition as one of the best teams in the country. They could potentially have a BCS bowl in their future with a win here and next week. Air Force has many injuries and got spanked last week against TCU. I have watched Utah and they are a relentless team that is physical in all aspects of the game. They may not play their best game but it will be enough to beat an injury plagued Falcon team.

    Florida +2.5 over Georgia

Georgia is favored in this game and I don’t know why. Their wins are against Louisiana Lafayette, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and a very tired Kentucky team. Not exactly the cream of the crop. Florida is coming off of three straight losses, they have had a week off, and they are underdog. This means that they are going to be rested , focused, and upset that Georgia is now considered better than they are by the odds-makers and the public. They will play with a chip on their shoulder and their defense will be as fired up as they possibly can be in any game. Florida will win outright in this neutral site game.

    Arkansas -20 over Vanderbilt

Arkansas will roll this week over a depleted Vanderbilt team that is not very good. Vanderbilt will be starting a true freshmen at corner after losing Jamie Graham last week. Their starting safety also got hurt last week and is out. Neither of those injuries bodes well against Arkansas and Ryan Mallet. Arkansas’ defense will look to play better and Vanderbilt is the perfect team in which to get back your defensive mojo. Arkansas in a romp.

    UCLA plus 9 over Arizona

Arizona’s remaining four games after this week against UCLA are Stanford, USC, Oregon, and Arizona State. After spanking Washington at home with the backup QB and seeing UCLA get spanked on national TV, expect the Wildcats to be a little overconfident and unfocused against the Bruins who are physical on the offensive line. Take the points at home

    Indiana vs Northwestern over 58

As stated in the Game Preview, both teams are vulnerable to points through the air. Expect QB Chappell and QB Persa to have big games.
