    College Football Picks Week 7

    Updated: October 11th, 2010

Thursday Night Game West Virginia -10 over South Florida

Huge disadvantage for South Florida to be playing on 4 days rest and having to travel to West Virginia. South Florida also relies on a one man show type of offense and from all the games I have watched of South Florida’s he gets fatigued very easily. South Florida is also primarily a running team and West Virginia is excellent against the run having held LSU to 4.2 yards a carry, UNLV to 2.4 yards a carry, and Maryland to negative yards rushing. Now South Florida has had great success in the past against West Virginia having handled them the last 4 years. This is a new year and it is obvious to me that QB Daniels is not yet comfortable in the new offensive scheme from coach Holtz. I think it is time for the tides to turn this year as West Virginia will take out 4 years of frustration on USF and QB Daniels.

    Minnesota plus 5 over Purdue

Purdue is limited in the passing game with Freshman QB Henry and will try to establish the run which is not their expertise. Last week’s success came against the Wildcats who lack physicality across the board. Minnesota has been improving slightly on defense which should be enough to contain the Purdue attack. Minnesota has a big offensive line and should be able to establish enough run to allow QB Weber to make some plays. The balance of run and pass gets it done for the Gophers.

Illinois plus 7 over Michigan State

Michigan State comes off 3 consecutive huge efforts and a drop off in energy is expected.
The Illinois Defensive line led by Liuget and Nurse has been playing stoutly which should help Illinois limit yards up the middle. Illinois speedy linebacker group should be able to prevent the big runs of Michigan State on the perimeter where most of them have come. On offense, QB Scheelhaase and the offensive line are both improving. I am expecting a low scoring physical battle and will take the touchdown.

Illinois vs Michigan State under 49 1/2

    See Pick Above

Colorado State -3 1/2 over UNLV

This is Colorado’s chance to get a much needed win against a very beatable opponent in UNLV. Col. State put up huge numbers against Air Force last week in a loss attributed to the worst special team performance I have ever seen. They should be fired up to get their second win of the year against a bad UNLV team which they should be able to power run against. UNLV also may be looking ahead to TCU at home in a few weeks. Colorado state should score at will in this one and giving the 3 ½ is a very low line to us.

    Arkansas +4 over Auburn

I previewed this game but did not give the pick away. I will take the match-up in this one and go with Arkansas and the points. Should go down to the wire in any case because Auburn keeps all their opponents in the game. Great SEC game and Arkansas has a better than average chance to upset because they win all the match-ups. Iowa-Michigan over 53 1/2

Iowa’s receivers should find separation against the youth of Michigan which will lead to big plays. Michigan’s scheme should exploit Iowa’s lack of speed at the linebacker position. Last year’s game in Iowa was a back and forth affair. I expect the same, only the scoring will be quicker.

Ohio St -3 1/2 over Wisconsin

Air Force -1 over San Diego State

See Preview—Air Force is our pick in this one. They will control the game with their very potent offense. San Diego State plays 3 down linemen with very unaggressive linebackers. I think their secondary is a weakness and the coach knows this and does not allow them to come up near the line. Air Force will eat that defensive scheme up and beat San Diego State like they did last year and the two before that. Lay the one point

Syracuse plus 1 1/2 over Pittsburgh

Syracuse impressed me on their offensive and defensive lines last week. They ran the ball very well against South Florida right up the gut and dominated the second half. It has been a long time since Syracuse has had a decent team and they will be flying at the stadium this week against an average Pitt squad. The line has moved a great deal in this game toward Pittsburg so I like taking Syracuse even more. Take the 1 ½ points.
