2011 Early Look at Intensity Edge Standouts

Looking at the schedules for the 2011 season, there are a few games that jump out at me as I am always looking for specific games where scheduling can provide an advantage verse the spread. The following are a few irrespective of order.

    1) Texas Am vs Arkansas on October 1st, in Arlington, TX.
Although both teams will have sights on conference championships which make every conference game important, Arkansas will clearly be at a disadvantage in energy and focus when playing the Aggies on October 1st. This game which was renewed a few years ago brings back memories of the Southwest Conference battles from years ago. Arkansas has one the last two. Last year’s game was a close defensive battle. This year Arkansas will enter Arlington coming off their first SEC Game at Alabama on September 24th and they also host the national championship Auburn Tigers the following week on October 8th. Can the Razorbacks be focused in Arlington? Probably not, but it does depend on the effort and result of the Week 4 game against the Tide. Texas AM doesn’t have it much better. They host the Oklahoma State Cowboys on September 24th and the have to travel to play the Red Raiders on October 8th. Will the Aggies put forth a huge effort in a non-conference game? Probably. The stands will be filled with mostly fantastic Aggie fans, the team is thinking of a possible national championship this year, and Arkansas has gotten the better of them the last two years. Depending on September 24th’s results, the Aggies should have an focus advantage.
    2) Idaho hosts Bowling Green, September 1st
Idaho opens season at home on a Thursday with possible national TV coverage. The Vandals will be super energized to open the season and the Falcons should have a tough time matching Idaho’s energy on the road in Week 1.
    3) Arizona State at Illinois, September 17th
The Sun Devils play the Missouri Tigers at home on September 10th and start Pac 12 play on September 24th when they host USC. In between these big games, is a road trip to play the Fighting Illini who will be geared up to play the Sun Devils since their first two opponents are non FBS teams. The Sun Devils will be facing a fired up Illinois crowd and focused team.
